Peak Hill Home - Hampshire, GB

State-of-the-art PB-1 heating solution for luxury home

A solid floor underfloor heating system and its unique Modular Heating Panels using Polybutene-1 (PB-1) piping was selected to deliver efficient heating for an exclusive project in Hampshire, UK. Located on a hill and heated via an air-source heat pump, the project demonstrated how the latest PB-1 systems can satisfy the most demanding needs.

A large residential space required a cost-efficient heating system

Situated on the former Peak Hill Bungalow site in Steventon, the build covers some 350 sq. metres encompassing six bedrooms. With efficiency high on the list of priorities for the new homeowners, the plumbing company also had to consider the type of underfloor heating they would install to ensure maximum comfort and help towards lowest possible running costs.

PB-1 Product System Selection

Working closely with Hampshire-based RMR Builders, Beauworth Plumbing recommended a Solid Floor system for the ground floor of the property as this would not only provide an effective heating solution that could be used in association with an air-source heat pump, but the flexible Polybutene-1 pipe could be easily adapted to easily fit around the tight bends of the property.

The hill meant that there were effectively two levels to each floor, and therefore the ground floor required the 15mm Polybutene-1 pipe to bend 90 degrees. As such, a PolyPlumb Bend Former from Polypipe’s Plumbing & Heating accessory range was selected as the ideal solution.

Installing the system was quick and efficient. Michael and his team cut the lightweight red plastic panels to size on site, and then simply guided the Polybutene-1 heating pipes into the panels before laying over the concrete screed.

As well as installing underfloor heating to the ground floor of the Peak Hill property, the tradesmen also fitted a system to the first floor using Polypipe’s Modular Heating Panels. The supporting floor joists of the suspended first floor meant that a conventional underfloor heating system was not practical, due to the fact that those systems require that there are no obstructions to the laying of the pipe.

Customer Testimonial

Michael Lynn, Beauworth Plumbing, said: “The busy site traffic wasn’t an issue during installation; because the panel protects the pipe, RMR’s builders were able to continue other works within the property without fear of disrupting the installation, which was a further benefit to using Polypipe’s system above other alternatives. There was no extra work required at all to fit the system, which worked fantastically well in terms of keeping to schedule on the build.”

Polybutene-1 is often referred to as Polybutene, Polybutylene, PB-1 or PB.

Polybutene-1 is not sold by PBPSA members for use in pipe applications intended for use in North America, and those parties require their customers or distributors not to sell products made from PB-1 into pipe applications for North America.
